Meet Karyn - one of our Senior UX Designers

What’s your name?
Karyn Brice

What are your preferred pronouns?
she/her

What’s your title?
Senior Designer

How long have you worked at Ackama?
Since Jan 2020, just before COVID significantly impacted the way we work.

What does your job entail?
Designing ways to make the user’s life easier and better as they complete tasks via a screen interface. I try to do this by creating intuitive interfaces so they don’t even need to think about it. If they do have to think about it, my aim is to make it so that they enjoy doing that task!

What’s an area that you are passionate about and want to help change?
I am really passionate about both Accessibility and Emerging technologies; these two things can also complement each other.

    • Accessibility is important as we want all users to be able to access the products.
    • New and evolving technologies can help us shortcut the kinds of processes that we (humans) find arduous. It can really help us to create an immersive world that will allow us to explore the world and data in completely new ways.

What is a typical day like?
There is no typical day; as each day varies so much, but there are some types of things I will do often. For example, in any one day, I could be:

    • Running a workshop with senior stakeholders
    • Interviewing end-users
    • Brainstorming with developers
    • User-testing wireframes and prototypes
    • Applying visual design and branding to interfaces
    • Hanging out with the other designers at Ackama and chatting about all things design – ideas, ways of working, that sort of thing.

Not all of those things in one day, but a bit of a mix, sometimes just one of those things. The consistent thing is to start the day with good coffee.

What do you like most about your job?
It is so varied and I don’t just do one thing. One of the things l like the most is that I get to take a project through – from the start to the finish.

What do you like about working at Ackama
I like that Ackama is aiming to make the world a better place; and I also like that everyone at Ackama is their true selves. You can just turn up as who you are, which is really nice.

What do you like to do when you aren’t working?
I like to read and draw. I also love to watch candy floss tv shows (but I am not telling you which ones!!).
